Watchet
The heart of the town, the marina was refurbished in 2001 with a capacity for 250 yachts. It provides access to the Bristol Channel for visiting boats and is a centre of both leisure and fishing trips.
Separating Somerset and South Wales, the channel extends beyond Devon and Cornwall out into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s tidal flow, from the River Severn, provides the perfect dramatic backdrop to the area.
Britain’s longest heritage railway running 20 miles from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead. In summer they run around five services a day which are a mixture of steam engines and occasional diesel trains. It takes around 40 mins to Minehead - a delightful way to explore the coast and the surrounding countryside.
Exmoor and the Quantock Hills dominate the landscape of West Somerset. Running to Bridgwater, the Quantock’s were designated as England's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956 and sit alongside the rugged terrain of Exmoor with its wild deer and ponies. Both are easily accessible from Watchet.
Location
Watchet is easily accessible by road and rail. Just over a three hour drive from London, it is about 15 miles from Junction 23 of the M5. It takes around 25 minutes to drive from Taunton. There is now a shuttle rail link from Taunton to Bishops Lydeard, which connects national rail services with the West Somerset Railway. Alternatively there is a regular, daily bus service that runs from Taunton to Minehead via Watchet.
